Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club
Ashdown Park is a fabulously luxurious hotel and country park deep in the Sussex countryside but only a short hop from Gatwick airport. It is surrounded by Ashdown Forest, which A.A. Milne claimed was where he got the inspiration for his Winnie the Pooh stories. Part of the Elite Hotels group (other properties include Luton Hoo and Tylney Hall Hotel), this is your classic country park hotel, with a small, but elegant golf course and an excellent spa.
Eat: The Anderida Restaurant offers excellent fine dining courtesy of head chef Andrew Wilson, whose food draws on seasonal, local ingredients but serves up dishes with a European influence. The eight-course tasting menu is superb. There is also the more relaxed Fairways Lounge, which offers more of a bistro-style experience. Dogs aren't allowed in either, but they are allowed to join you on the terraces to eat outside in summer. Dogs aren't allowed anywhere in the main house.
Sleep: Dog owners can only book the Fairway suites located away from the main building adjacent to the country club, overlooking the golf course. There are six ground floor bedrooms, all with French doors leading out to a small patio. There is a £30 a night charge for dogs, although that includes dog basket, blanket, bowl, dinner and a chewy toy. You can leave dogs alone in the room (assuming they are OK with that) while you go to the restaurant or spa, or better still make use of the hotel's dog-sitting service for £15 an hour.
Walk: With 186 acres of landscaped gardens and parkland to explore, you might well not need to walk any further than the hotel's grounds. However, right on the doorstep is Ashdown Forest, which offers seven two-hour walks around its 6,500 acres (much of it rare open heathland).
