The Bull and Last
This trendy northwest London pub-restaurant serves up some of the cleverest damned pub grub in the whole city. In truth, it's more than a little unfair to even call it pub grub, as that suggests a lower level of kitchen craft than the Bull & Last brigade can muster. With a keen eye on fresh, seasonal and local produce, the team at the Bull & Last aim to provide "outstanding seasonal food and great service, while retaining a traditional pub atmosphere". If the menu slips frequently closer to fine dining (think plenty of truffle oil and horseradish ice cream), the downstairs room maintains a rugged, rustic bar charm. A great wine list is supported by an excellent range of real ales and craft beers.
Dogs are allowed (and even welcomed) downstairs, while the smarter upstairs room is for two-legged types only - and whether you like to walk before or after lunch (or both) being on the edge of Hampstead Heath means there are plenty of excellent muddy rural/urban adventures to be had.
