The Felin Fach Griffin
The oldest of three “dining pubs with rooms” run by EatDrinkSleep, The Felin Fach Griffn nestles in a delightful spot between the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons, not far from the bookish town of Hay-on-Wye. The aim here, as it is at all of Charles Inkin’s pubs, is to return guests to a slower, more relaxed way of life. To do this Inkin has set out to recreate the age-old concept of a travellers’ inn. Inkin is also responsible for the wonderful concept of the Sleepover Sunday (available here and at the other establishments in the group). Sleepover Sundays include a cracking Sunday lunch, a relaxing afternoon walking or with the papers (but without the “Sunday fear”), a supper, a good night’s sleep and breakfast on Monday morning.
Eat: The mantra of seeking out the best fresh, seasonal and local ingredients has become standard issue for most kitchens. Here somehow it seems to still mean something. Head chef Ross Bruce creates food rooted in the local countryside and menus draw heavily on the kitchen garden. Your dog can join you for meals in the bar and Tack Room downstairs (provided other guests are OK with that). If you can, book table 11 when you book dinner. There is no extra charge for dogs, but it’s worth mentioning you’re bringing one when you book, as they will make sure you get a suitable table for your meals with space for the dog.
Sleep: The Griffin's owners describe it as "A warm building that pulls you in, envelops you in a big cuddle and sends you to bed with a smile on you face", which sounds perfect after a hard day's walking in the Brecon Beacons. Dogs are allowed in all seven bedrooms and there is no extra charge although dogs are also treated to bowls, treats, blankets and extra sheets for the beds.
Walk: This is classic walking country with the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains both within easy reach. And if that's not enough there is also the possibility of walking back through history on Offa's Dyke or taking in one of the three historic local castles (White, Skenfrith and Grosmont).
